It was announced on May 31st that the Atlanta Thrashers would be moving to Winnipeg, so that means it’s time for a new team identity contest! Luckily, our friends at puckdrawn.com were having just such a contest. The winning name and identity would receive an actual jersey of the concept they created, which I think is pretty cool.
This is my concept for the Winnipeg Logo and Jersey Design Competition on puckdrawn.com. My idea was to take the name of the city (Phoenix) that the previous Winnipeg Jets had moved to in 1997 and use that as nickname for the new team – thus the Winnipeg Phoenix. A phoenix is a mythological bird that sets fire to itself and is reborn a young phoenix. I thought that sounded perfect for a team for a city that had lost its team and would now be reborn again.
The first thing I did was come up with a moodboard for my concept. I found a few pictures of phoenixes as well as some maps and flags from Manitoba.
There were several things I wanted to accomplish with the concept – use the original colors of the Winnipeg Jets, blue, red and white, while adding a bit of orangey yellow from the Atlanta Thrashers. I also thought the first in the background was an homage to the other former Atlanta team, the Atlanta Flames which moved in 1980 to Calgary.
